As a citizen, can ask what sergeants are assigned to where in my city?
I live in San Jose, CA and I know the local police department tells you which Captains are in charge of specific areas but is it against policy for citizens to know what Lieutenants and sergeants are in your area? How would I find out (other than calling the actually department)?
It depends on the structure of your department. My department is broken down into different precincts with different units and shifts. You should be able to call and ask where any officer including Sgt. works. For my department which is in a major city area not all Sgt.'s sit at a desk doing paperwork all day.
