Police Blotter: April 20, 2011
Editor's note: The Police Blotter consists of excerpts from dispatch reports by area law enforcement agencies. These reports are public record. 8:29 a.m. — A caller from a business on the 1000 block of E. Main St. reported someone broke in through a locked sliding glass door and stole money.
How do police identify themselves when they respond to a dispatch call?
I imagine they have car numbers etc. (UK, specifically Edinburgh)
Brilliant Nick. Exactly what I was after. Thanks!
As in over the radio?
Over the radio, here each officer is assigned a callsign. For example, say 1W45 is the callsign. Here, the 1 would mean police department, the W would mean west sector, and the 45 would be the officers unique number. You would speak it "One - William - Four - Five"
As an example, these could be what the first number and letter means:
1 - City Police
2 - City Fire
3 - County Police
4 - EMS
5 - Volunteer FF Township X
6 - Volunteer FF Township Y
W - West sector
E - East sector
S - South sector
D - Detective
M - Any other motor patrol officer not assigned to a beat
If you're talking about in person it would be the marked police cars, lights, sirens, badges, and people yelling "Police! GET ON THE GROUND!"
