Can the police impound my car for leaving it for half a day on the side of the freeway?
It broke on the way to work, so I got a ride instead, and I had to leave on the side of the freeway till after work. But when I got there about 10 hours later, it was gone. Could the police have had in thrown into the impound?
Yes, the police will impound your vehicle, because leaving it on the side of the freeway is a safety hazard.

Police impound sales occur all over the country. The unfortunate thing for many people is that they know that they happen but don't have a method of how to find them in time so as to attend them. It always seems to be one of those sales that you would like to get to but aren't in the 'know'.
OK so it seems that the major problems are finding out where they're held at, what time and more importantly what's going to be there! This is where the 'work' element comes in.
There are several methods of finding these sales but you first have to consider the nature of these 'sales' - nine times out of ten they are actually auctions and furthermore held at public auction yards. The reason for this is that under most State laws all government or government agencies' confiscated goods must be sold publicly on a best bid basis to avoid any potential corruption. This potential for 'corruption' tag which could be easily leveled at government agencies if they didn't do this is best avoided by making the goods available for sale in any place other than police property although believe it or not this does sometimes happen!
Anyway enough said, now you know that most of the business is done by auction you need to look at classified ads or local newspapers as by law any impound auction must be advertised. So looking at local newspapers in your local library is the first action. It's a long process and isn't the most efficient method.
The next method is to do an online search for auctions in your local area. You will find them but ironically by the time the search engines have included them they are quite often over - but luckily not always. So this is a better method of search but still relatively imperfect.
The next method is by getting the yellow pages and looking up the various auction companies that you are prepared to travel to and ask them to put your details on a mailing list for when the next police impound sales are occurring. This works a treat but unfortunately some of these guys can't really be bothered to keep you informed as they already have so many bidders come into the yard anyway - so what's another one worth - probably not worth the effort in their estimation!
The last and final option which in my view is the best is join a membership site - these usually cost no more than about $35 so represent great value for money considering the time and effort it would take you to find the information yourself.
These will not only list the auction companies throughout the Country, they will tell you the times place and contact details - in particular the websites so as you can what these police impound sales are actually selling. Even though most of the goods that are sold are cars anything that has been impounded is sold this can even include boats, trucks and various other commercial vehicles and are constantly updated.
Did you know that you can save up to 90% by buying your car at Auction?
