***HELP ME*** Police Scanner Trunking?!?!?

Okay when I want to listen to a frequency, I enter the frequency in my handset, I hit enter, then it broadcasts the frequency.... But for the trunked systems. Can someone give me a STEP by STEP on what you haver to do to access the trunked systems...? And please just dont respond saying "go to radio shack" or "go to this website" unless that website has a specific STEP by STEP guide on this issue. I may be confused or just thinking too hard about it. Is it complicated and hard to get into a trunked system. Its Motorola Type II Trunking system. I have a 164-pro, It supports this kind of trunking system, but I dont even know how to access it. I just hear this "chopper: sound which some website said that was the trunking sound.... Im confused... I couldnt even listen to frequencies but at least I can do that, with some help from a buddy I met on here! Thank you guys soooo much you guys are life-savers!

OK, I'm not going to be able to give you step by step instruction but go to the Radio Shack website and download the manual for the unit instead. Here's the link to that unit.

I think I bought one of these a few years ago and decided that it was so user unfriendly that I took it back and got a used Pro 94 from a pawn shop and have been using that ever since. Most Radio Shacks don't have anyone that knows anything about these things anyway and in the past I've found it pointless to go there for help. If you really need help, check with the local fire departments, especially if you have volunteer depts in your area. These folks usually have scanners and know how to program them.
Without having the unit in my hand I can't be too specific but the chopper sound that you're hearing is a data channel that controls all of the frequencies in the trunk system. The number of frequencies involved will vary, one of mine in 29, If you are hearing that it means that your scanner is not in trunk mode and is just scanning the channels looking for signals. Activate the trunk mode, on the Pro 94 this is done simply by pressing the button marked trunk, on you scanner it should be something similar.
Motorola Type II systems are very common and should not cause any problems for the scanner. Make sure you have all of the frequencies programed and programmed for a trunking system.
The key to scanning a trunking system is to remember that the scanner has to scan all of the frequencies first and then the group id's next. Once you get yours in trunk mode the rest should come pretty easily.
Sorry this didn't give you specifics but hopefully it will get you going in the right direction.
Good luck and hope this helps.
