The Loopers' Best Kept Secret...
Affectionately nicknamed by cruisers "The Little Great Loop", the Down East Loop consists of mostly inland waterways of Northeastern America and the lower east of Canada. Beginning in early to mid June, the Little Loop takes cruisers from New York City back to New York City totaling approximately 2400 nm. This makes the trip perfect for a 3-month summer cruise. The Down East Loop is considered to be a less demanding route compared to the Great Loop but no less exciting and adventurous for its cruisers. This route provides the best of the Great Loop without the time commitment. This really is the ideal cruise for boaters without the ability to give up an entire year to cruise.
Where and what can you explore on the Down East Loop...
As cruisers Susann & Alan Syme aboard their M/V Kaos describe, "The trip is filled with cultural diversity. From the large cities of New York, Montreal, Quebec City, Halifax and Boston, steeped in history to small historic fishing villages of Nova Scotia and Maine. This diversity encompasses both the USA & Canada, with exposure to the English, French and Acadian ways of life." It is easy to see that diversity is abundant on the Down East Loop in both culture and cities.
Commencing in the Big Apple, the Down East Loop starts off with a bang! Cruising into NY harbor and seeing the Statue of Liberty is described by most cruisers as an incredibly emotional experience. The busy streets of one of the United States' largest cities provide enough sightseeing to keep any traveler occupied. Whether it's attending a Broadway production or enjoying the historic sights of the city, New York has something for everyone.
After taking in the Big Apple, cruisers will head up the mighty Hudson River into Canada. Here in Quebec, Down East Loopers can be found shopping, going to the movies, eating Gelato, exploring historic ports, enjoying hundreds of bistros and sidewalk cafes, and sight seeing in picturesque Old Quebec. If you have a sweet tooth, don't forget to visit the chocolate museum!
After visiting Quebec, Loopers are on their way to Montreal. A stop in Ottawa is a must while here. Down East Loop cruisers Leslie and Doug Folkerth explain their visit with passion: "We love Ottawa! Ok, this has got to be the best city ever. We'll be here for several days, but there are just so many things to see and do, we could stay here forever and still not see anything." Leslie and Doug suggest visiting the Byward Market which was founded in the 1820s and has lots of outdoor stalls and indoor shops, RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police), Chinatown, Gateneaus which is similar to a state park, and the estates of McKenzie King and Kingswood.

First off we went to Byward Market, which was founded in the 1820s and has lots of outdoor stalls and indoor shops.
Then to RCMP where we saw the horses and got a tour of the stables. We went past all the various government buildings, through Chinatown, and stopped for lunch at the omnipresent Tim Horton's, Gateneaus, which is like a state park. It was really beautiful, and we also visited the estate of McKenzie King and Kingswood. He was a much beloved prime minister of Canada for quite a while, toured the Parliament, Royal Canadian Mint and the Currency Museum, Museum of Civilization."
