Unauthorized Credit Card Usage? What should I do?
So I just found out today, that someone has been using my credit card number for numerous purchases ranging from baby clothes to a new flat screen, thanks to my credit card company. All online. I've already contacted and stopped and freezed my credit card, all of them and put up an alert on all three of my credit reports.
I know I sound overreacting, but better safe than sorry.
I've got the information in my hand to whom the products were shipped to; I have the name, home address, phone number and cell phone from the 12 companies I contacted this morning.
What should I do next? Should I contact the local police department where he lives and have him arreseted? Or should I call him and tell him off?
I'm a little peeved right now, but not to the point however to get myself in trouble with the law. Any suggestions?
Call your credit card company. Tell them you need the card number deactivated and that you want to dispute the charge. The credit card company will initiate an investigation called a "Reg E". They can't try to collect the disputed balance during the investigation period. If they cannot provide proof that you made the charge, they will remove it from your account and charge the balance back to the store that accepted the card number.
After this, you can call the police. Don't call him and compromise the investigation.
