How do Police name their cases?
I'm writing an investigative story and I"m trying to figure out all that detective stuff. I hear a lot about numbering cases but I also hear a lot about how they give the case a name.
As the other poster pointed out, cases get report numbers, not names.
A high profile case may get a informal nickname by the police. Many times the press give the case a name to sensationalize the incident.
Now multi-agency investigations will get a name because different agencies use different ways of numbering. This will have to do with a certain aspect of the case like:
A task force going after a rapist who wears a red ski mask may get called "the red mask task force" or a group of robbers who use stolen Mustangs may get "stolen pony group." In San Francisco, the "Zebra" Killings task force was named after the radio channel they were assigned, Channel "Z"
There is one more way a case will get a name. If the case is so sensitive, and referring to it in the above manor may compromise security it will be given a code word randomly selected (i.e. open a book and point to a word with your eyes closed, no kidding I saw that!)
How To Access Police Records On The Internet To Locate Someones Court Cases
Police records contain the details of all the registered police cases or criminal cases for a particular area. Police records are mainly searched and verified for the criminal background check of an individual. They can be great way to find someone’s court cases if that person has been persecuted in a court of law. The police records can be found on many ways, but nowadays people prefer to access police records on the internet.
There are several reasons why people access police records on the internet. First it’s the cheapest and fastest way possible. Second, it’s user friendly and easy to use, plus you don’t have to deal with regulations and such stuff. If you prefer you can find police records or court cases down at the police station or a local courthouse. Whatever you chose the procedure is same. Service officer will give you a request form that you need to fill and hand it over. You can request this form by phone or email, or if you prefer by formal letter. Requesting forms isn’t hard but getting those verified takes for days. That’s right, finding police records can turn to be a long and tiresome process. Some people on the other hand prefer to use detective agencies to find their court cases or any other records, but those agencies are bit expensive so you better not hire them if you don’t have some extra cash.
On the other hand finding police records or court cases on the internet is free of charge and it’s done in a matter of seconds. All that you need to do is to choose what kind of records you wish to obtain and type in some basic info about the person you wish to check and that’s it. After you click the search button you’ll get complete list of records that meet your search criteria.

Police work missing person cases without much publicity
With national media attention again focused on the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, missing persons cases in the area seem to garner less exposure. Holloway, an Alabama native, first went missing in 2005 during a trip to Aruba after graduating high school.
