Non-lethal police equipment

Baton, pepper spray, taser, water cannon, LED incapacitators, whip, and plastic bullets are among the more commonly used non-lethal police equipment.

Batons are a must for policemen involved in riot control, but are carried by policemen also during their routine patrol duties or while going for crime investigation. Most manufacturers make collapsible batons so that it can be easily tucked away in the duty belt. This makes this bit of police equipment quite low profile and easy to carry.

Collapsible batons can be opened instantly on need and once expanded remains firmly locked in place. Batons come in many lengths ranging from 16" to 31" and the size that is in popular use among policemen is 26". The black chrome baton that is more commonly used is made of carbon steel and the holding portion has got vinyl to provide a firm grip. Batons are variously coated with zinc, chrome, or nickel as protection against corrosion.

Pepper spray, also called capsicum spray or sometimes OC spray, is non-lethal police equipment that subdues the victim by temporarily incapacitating him by causing pain and irritation in the eyes or even temporary blindness. It can be easily carried in the duty belt and taken out at extremely short notice and used. Pepper sprays even come incorporated into flashlights, thus lending itself to very easy use. The pepper spray-flashlight combination is very effective police equipment because of the camouflage effect it gives to the pepper spray. It can be used in the guise of aiming the flashlight at the victim.

A taser is a weapon that causes involuntary muscle contractions in the victim and reduces his voluntary muscle control. This non-lethal police equipment works by passing a high voltage electrical discharge into the resisting person's body through metal probes connected to the device. Though the voltage is high, it is a low-current discharge that does not let in an amount of current that could be fatal or dangerous.

A water cannon is effective police equipment for riot control because it shoots streams of water at high pressure covering large areas. Large water cannons mounted on trucks, with a capacity of about 2000 gallons, have been developed by manufacturers for police use. This is police equipment that finds increasingly less use in the United States though it is quite popular in parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Water cannons can even be remote controlled by a joystick nowadays. This makes the operating of the water cannon a comparatively risk free operation for the law enforcement agent who is in charge of it.

LED incapacitators are avant-garde police equipment, which is in the form of a flashlight. It works by flashing an extra bright and rapidly moving light into the victim's eyes. The light moves so rapidly that before the eye can see one light frequency correctly the other one appears so that the person would fail to see both. The confusion thus created can cause such pressure on the brain that it will result in vision problems, vomiting, pain, and disorientation in the victim. This police equipment is more in an experimental stage now, and is not yet being commonly used. Whips and plastic bullets also come under the list of non-lethal police equipment.
