BUCYRUS POLICE
Why do police vehicles have two different sounding sirens?
Whenever I see a police vehicle with lights and sirens, sometimes the sirens will change sound briefly and go back. Why is this and what does it mean?
To get your attention. when it changes, in pitch, or even the siren style, it is so we notice, not just get used to the sound. Also the sounds from a modern electronic siren, are very difficult to tell which direction it comes from, and switching the siren helps people hear where it comes from. That is why Large emergency vehicles have a mechanical "federal Q" on them. sounds like an old air raid or tornado siren, which is mostly on fire trucks. Those types along with an airhorn, make it easier to hear the direction it come from. they are only on large vehicles because they use to much electricity. go on youtube and search sirens. different styles are; Federal Q/ E-Q2b,
Yelp, Wail, Powercall there are tons of others to.
