If I want to get in the NYPD, what pointers you guys can give me on geting the job, promotion or anything.?

If I want to get in the NYPD, what pointers you guys can give me on geting the job, promotion or anything.?
Like getting a degree in criminal justice for promotion,
Study a police officer exam book,
Never kiss ***, go to college on off duty, Take boxing.
I’m military, and guys tell me that I don’t need college because of it, but I feel like I need some education. I feel stupid. Somebody told me EMT school could help me look good for the interview. So any advice you can give me?

First off, its a civil service test. As long as you pass the test, have the 60 credits or military and applicant investigation clears you..you are on. Everything else would be a "thats nice".

NYC civil service, if you are not familiar with it, is a world unto itself. Everything is rules, procedures etc. If you pass and meet the requirements posted in the Notice of Examination..you are in. Its like an assembly line....pass the test. get a list number. get called. Meet with investigator. do lots of paperwork. Get a medical. If everything comes out pass and you meet the college/military requirements...you are in.

BTW...if you take the test and do not get a decent list number...take the next one. They are offered a few times a year now. If you are not in the top few thousand, the list may expire before you are called, so if they move on to the next test list...it helps to be on that as well. Plus, since its free...you can learn how the test is.

As far as promotion. Every rank up to Capt (SGt, LT, Capt) is also a civil service test. There are college requirements to take the test, but its still a test.

Designations like detective and special units are based more on job performance. A unit like ESU (swat like, only better) having your EMT would help, along with scuba, weapons skills, firefighting etc. But, you need a couple of years on patrol for that anyway.

As far as advanced criminal justice degress, while they help, they are not required and really don't give you any leg up with the entry level PO civil service test.

As far as education, they will teach you all you need to know in the academy. If you still fell insecure...take some 101 level english and reading classes at a local community college. Build up your reading ability and reading comprehension. That will help, becasue the academy is a lot of reading and reading comprehension.

There are prep books, there are even courses you can take for the test. if that helps you...great. I think the city even offers free classes as well. Call them at (212) RECRUIT

As far as the job itself? Its the greatest show on earth. You'll never get rich, but you'll never starve either. 50% pay for life after 20 years (as early as 41 if you get on at 21) with lifetime full medical. You will see stuff and do stuff other people watch cops to try and see.

The job is what you make of it as well. Want to do nothing, put in your 20 and leave...thats great but the job will suck for you.

If you get on and become and active cop, make collars, get a name...you'll get in the special units, you'll meet people and you'll love the job.

The test is offered on a walk in basis. Take it. I think its even free. go to the DCAS website and file or go down. Get your name on the list. You can defer if you are active duty and keep your place. When you get discharged, they will put you in the next class. They are also changing the pension rules (or they want to) to do away with the 20 and out pension...so now is the time to get on since the new rules won't apply.

good luck
