On February 13, we witnessed another terror strike in Pune when a powerful bomb ripped apart German Bakery near a Jewish prayer house, killing nine people, including five women and two foreigners, and injuring 60 others, in the first major attack since the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
An Italian women and an Iranian student were among the nine persons killed in the blast. Anti-Terrorism Squad and bomb disposal squad had visited the spot to determine the nature of the blast soon after it occurred. The scene of the blast, that destroyed the bakery, was littered with thick patches of blood and severed limbs.
The blast site, German bakery is a favourite food joint for foreigners, located near to Osho Ashram, which had been surveyed by Pakistani-origin American David Coleman Headley, who is now in FBI's custody in the US. Indian government is trying to interrogate Headley in Mumbai attacks and other aspects of his staying in India but could not be succeeded to get permission by the US administration as yet.
Investigators believed the indigenous terror outfit, Indian Mujahideen (IM), was behind this bakery blast as they have found similarities between the bomb planted at German Bakery and those that didn't explode in Surat in July 2008, which are believed to have been planted by the IM. The forensic report into Pune blast has said that RDX was used and the quantity was around one to one and a half kg.
It is thought that IM had three factions. The Mumbai one, which is led by Sadiq Shaikh and Riyaz Bhatkal is responsible for operations in southern states. The northern regions used to be handled by Aatif Ameen before he was killed by the STF in the 2008 Delhi Batla House encounter. After that the operational head for north India is not known.
The foreign secretary-level talks with Pakistan are scheduled on February 25 and it will go ahead without any change. May be the blast was timed to derail the resumption of dialogue between India and Pakistan but Government does not want to stop the proceedings.
Home Minister P Chidambaram ruled out intelligence failure and said the terror groups are targeting soft targets where a no. of foreign origin people come and stay. However he and Home Secretary G K Pillai are not ruling out foreign hand in the attack. Security stepped up in cities like Delhi, Kanpur and Indore after Pune blast.
The investigating agencies are concentrating to find the link between Lashkar-e-Taiba and IM because suspected LeT terrorist David Coleman Headley stayed near this German Bakery when he was in Pune. CCTV footage from a luxury hotel opposite the German Bakery has also found and It is been examined by Investigators. Two people with suspected links to Indian Mujahideen were detained on Tuesday morning by police in connection with the February 13 German Bakery blast. On Monday, Pune Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh said that investigations into the blast were on the "right track".
