If it weren't for prom's, sweet sixteen's, banquets, weddings and funerals there would be an entire generation of people who may never have to wear a suit. Professional attire in the workplace is changing. With the inception of a new generation of young, relaxed, hyper-connected employees entering the workforce and others still starting their own businesses its becoming less and less likely to see young adults walking around with suits and ties. The only exception to this observation are young adults who work in industries were the old guard has laid down their sword yet.
People who work in finance, legal or in a few facets of business can be caught wearing suits to work but even in these rigid industries we're beginning to see the shift in company culture. Casual Fridays are becoming the status quo as dress codes get more and more lax and there's even talk of shortening the work week to four days. To some elders the four-day workweek and relaxed dress code are signs that the younger generation has lost it. How can they wear short sleeve graphic tees to a board meeting? What is it a skateboard meeting?
Apparently it is. Many, many twenty-something's are walking around with the title of Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operational Officer and they care more about their career than their outfit. The age of start-ups has given way to the age of a high-pressure and high-performance world of executives dressing like mailroom interns. If things continue at this pace armies of employees coming into work wearing graphic t-shirts complete with colorful designs will one day be the majority and the suit will stay hanging in the closet.
