Alicante Airport Car Hire: The Road Rules You Need to Know When Driving in Alicante, Spain
If you are flying into Alicante Airport, arranging car hire at Alicante Airport affords the ideal way to explore the region and get the most out of your holiday. It is important to remember though that you are driving in a foreign country and as such should be aware of the local road regulations and rules before you travel. The most obvious one to bear in mind, especially if this is your first time is to keep on the right, as the Spanish drive on the opposite side of the road. Sounds simple but if you're had years of driving on the left obstacles like roundabouts can seem very strange. Just remember to look to your left as this is where the traffic will be coming from. This is usually made easier by the fact that the driver's seat and controls is on the lefthand side of your Alicante Airport car rental.
With the exception of Fernando Alonso, Spanish drivers tend to be a bit erratic, allowing their fiery, Mediterranean temperaments and machismo attitudes to rule the road. Do not expect them to slow down or move over to let you in if merging off of a slip road onto a motorway. It is not a problem though as long as you bear in mind that they are not as courteous as UK drivers and make allowances accordingly. Seat belts in the front and rear are obligatory while children under 12 cannot sit in the front seat unless a specially adapted restraint is being used. You should be able to book these with your Alicante Airport car hire company in advance. Speed limits are set at 120 km/h on the motorway, 90-100 km/h on open roads and 50 km/h through towns, although when these vary there will be signs clearly marking this.
It is tempting when on holiday to have a few alcoholic beverages but the drink-drive limit in Spain is even stricter than in the UK and it just isn't worth the risk. The law states only 0.5 milligrams of alcohol is allowed per millilitre of blood, while in the UK it is 0.8 mg/ml. Most car rental firms in Alicante Airport will not hire to anyone under 21 and even then there is usually an extra charge levied on those under 25. However if you are a new driver be advised that for you the drink-drive limit is even tougher at just 0.1 mg/ml, effectively meaning you can not consumer any alcohol and drive. As in the UK the use of cell phones is prohibited while driving. Hands-free kits are allowed but not the earpiece attachments.
When driving in Spain it is expected that certain items be present in the vehicle at all time. These include your driving license, insurance documents, ownership/rental documents, a spare pair of glasses (if you wear them), fluorescent jackets for all occupants and 2 warning triangles. It is well worth checking when you collect your Alicante car hire that the jackets and triangles are there because you can be fined for this. Spanish law states that if you have to stop by the side of the highway you must put on a reflective jacket. For minor offences such as this and speeding the Guardia Civil are well within their rights to ask you as a tourist to pay your fine on the spot, even going so far as to march you to the nearest cashpoint if you do not have the money on you or impounding your car. Paying immediately also has the added benefit of a 20 percent reduction but be sure to get a receipt if you believe the fine was unfair.
There has been a problem with thieves targeting tourists while driving. On the roads leading to and from Alicante El Altet Airport, in particular the E15, A7, A70 and N332, bogus undercover police officers travelling in unmarked cases have been pulling people over and robbing them. However in matters relating to traffic, police officers will almost always be in uniform and if they are not then their vehicles will clearly display a flashing electronic "Policia" or "Guardia Civil" sign in the back and a blue flashing light in their headlights. You are entitled to ask for identification when the approach the car and you can check the vehicle registrations details with the Guardia Civil on 062 or the Spanish National Police on 112 to confirm it is actually an official police vehicle. Another trick is that thieves will cause a minor accident, maybe by bumping your car, and while you are exchanging insurance details an accomplice will be stealing your belongings so be vigilant.
Fortunately these incidents are relatively rare and most visitors to Alicante experience a blissful, trouble-free holiday but it is good to be forewarned and know what to do should the situation arise. Lastly be sure to check what fuel your Alicante rental car takes. Unleaded is called "sin plomo" while diesel is "gasoleo".
