The absolute key to you not getting burned at a Police seizure auction is that you have the basic belief going in that it won't be a free lunch, you are going to have to be prepared to do some substantial detective work(no pun intended) if you expect to get a solid deal.
If you are planning on attending a police seizure auction then the first thing that you should do is find out by calling the auction house, when the pre-inspection days will be scheduled and if they will offer a vehicle history report.
Police seizure auctions are no different than any other auctions in that the Police and the auction house are interested in getting as much as they can. In the case of the auction house, never forget that they are going to average a 5% commission on top of your winning bid....Don't forget to add this into your max bid folks...
The key to being successful at a Police seizure auction is securing reliable car history and a very complete vehicle inspection....Make sure you match up the vins, if they don't match then drop your bid by 50% if you are still interested in the vehicle.
Securing Reliable Car History:
Some auction houses provide a complimentary vehicle history report, if not, then you can easily acquire your own for very little cost through either Autocheck or Carfax. Keep in mind that the vehicle history report is not the end all be all of success here folks, it is an odds improver, it will point out if the title has been re-built and/or if other major items such as major accidents etc have occurred but, it isn't going to tell all....At the end of the day it is still our responsibility to confirm it's reliability by inspecting vehicles of interest.
Ultimately you will get an overall score, you should stick in general with 85% or better, there is no reason to accept less, there is just too much supply for you to accept anything less than that.
The key to being successful at a Police seizure auction is combining the above with a very complete inspection on either your or you're mechanics part at pre-auction. If you do these two things correctly than your odds of success are greatly improved in getting a great deal at a Police seizure auction.
