As we all know cops have a dangerous and grueling job. Not all are cut out for that job. The pay is low and dangers are many. Maintaining a strong, fit body is not only good for the cob, but it will help them when they need to do physical restraining of outlaws. List below are some of the concepts and practices to help cops keep their bodies in good working order.
Foot pursuit is a very common thing a cop must do. Usually this will happen when you choke down that greasy fast food hamburger, and or sitting in the patrol care, waiting for a call. Along with the protective vest which is not lightweight and the duty belt, the cop has added weight to deal with. If a cop will run constantly incorporate it with his daily exercise regime, they will be better equipped to run down the assailant and will not have a heart attack in the process. Although too much running can cause injuries run no more than four days a week. Even better would be do the running every other day. If wanting or needing more cardio, try swimming or bicycling. But do not replace the running. It affects the body differently than another exercise so the cop will need it.
Cops will tell you in their experiences, chances of catching up the perp are slim to none. Most of the time, they end up chasing some skinny, chemically enhanced drug user that can usually run like a deer. Just keeping a visual contact with the runner is the best defense most cops use, not trying to catch up with them. There is usually a time when you can get them, just keeping an eye on them or they just stop running. Once the cop has apprehended the runner, keep your head, stay relaxed and pursue at about 90% of your top speed.
Cops do not have the luxury of say professional athletes that have hours to prepare for a competition. Cops can’t do warming up or stretching exercises prior to some intense physical activity. So the street cop must be flexible. You will have to go from sitting on your buttocks to a full bore pursuit in minutes. You must get those exercises without warm ups, and your body will adjust to it with a lot of practice. Do those stretching exercises at least once a day, just before your shift starts. Keeping your upper body is just as important as the bottom part.
Most police stations offer their police officers a work out room or a gym. Try getting in there and work on the strengthening exercises. Do the exercises that are explosive and powerful. Training with those heavy weights will do it. And eat right; do not eat that greasy hamburger seven days a week. At home eat sensible meals and drink that water! Take along healthy snacks to munch on while on a stake out. Be safe.
